Airport Sustainability & Environmental Initiative of the Year

Winner: Sustainable Unit Design and Build – SSP Group

SSP Group is focused on reducing climate impact, minimising waste and sourcing responsibly

The top accolade in this category went to Sustainable Unit Design and Build – SSP Group, multiple airports, UK, recognised for its innovative approach to reducing the environmental impact of airport food and retail units. One of the judges commented: “It has long been my view that construction can be better delivered for less environmental impact. Great to see the Group take the lead corporately in an area that really needs leadership given the impact this area can have on the capex (and other investment) commitments of such a large organisation.”

SSP has embedded sustainability across the design, build and operation of its units, which account for approximately 17% of the Group’s global carbon footprint. SSP Group CEO Patrick Coveney said: “This isn’t just about commercial efficiency – it’s about doing what’s right for customers and clients and delivering good returns on great restaurants. By minimising waste, optimising resources and designing for long-term operational efficiency, we’re making real progress toward our sustainability commitments and a more responsible way of operating.”

The company’s Global Sustainability Strategy is structured around three strategic pillars – Product, Planet and People – underpinned by ten key commitments and net-zero goals for 2032 and 2040.

Regional winners also showcased impactful sustainability initiatives. In the Americas, Waste Wars – Vancouver Airport Authority, Vancouver International Airport, Canada was praised for being “very clear, effective and focused on what matters to everyone,” with the airport taking a leadership position to drive collaboration with business partners.

In Asia Pacific, Chefs for Good – Travel Food Services, Indian and other Asian airports was celebrated as “a wholesome, creative initiative with powerful parallel benefits”, extending sustainability efforts beyond airport terminals into local communities.

For the Middle East & Africa, Sustainability – Driving Impact – SSP Eastern Europe & Middle East, Zayed International Airport, UAE exemplified a “well-rounded programme built on the framework provided by the parent Group” and successfully applied corporate strategy locally with energy and imagination.
